The “New Normal”
40 is the new 30. Orange is the new black. 600 calories is the new 300 calories.
We have a problem. 20 years ago the average turkey sandwich contained 320 calories. Today? Try 820. According to research by NYC Health and the NIH, over the last 20 years there has been a dramatic growth in portion sizes.
This “new normal” presents a problem. It means that even the most health conscious consumers face a real challenge, because the problem is not just limited to inherently unhealthy foods. Along with the increase in size of our burgers and fries, the portions of our salads (along with fattening dressings), lean proteins, and whole grain carbs have also grown. 1000 calories of quinoa is still 1000 calories.
Even if you order a healthy option from a restaurant or delivery service, you’re often confronted by a huge portion 2 or 3 times larger than you actually need.
Well, as grandma always said: waste not want not. Better clean your plate, right? Or, if you have better self-control than I, pop some in the fridge for a later meal. But that’s a pretty poor solution to a deeper problem: everyone knows leftovers and reheated food are never as good.
You could cook all your food yourself for the ultimate in portion control, but this isn’t always a viable answer either.
If only there was a way to have more flexibility and choice in crafting a properly portioned meal… oh wait, there is. Portion-aware eater, meet the à la carte menu. This lovely phrase, which our language borrowed from our French friends across the Atlantic, refers to a menu in which items normally grouped together are broken apart so that the customer has maximum control. By picking and choosing à la carte items you have the ability to make a custom dining experience to match your caloric and dietary needs.
